Choosing an Online Credit Card Merchant Account

As an online business you understand the need of accepting and processing credit cards on your website in order to keep your business going. However, choosing the right online credit card merchant account provider is simply difficult if you don’t have any leads to work from.

For example, if you search Google or another large search engine you will quickly see there are thousands of online credit card merchant account providers advertising their services online, so how do you find the best one for the best price amidst all the others that aren’t quite as good or are downright bad?

The answer is to learn what you need from an online credit card merchant account provider and then search a variety of companies that offer these services.

Inner Workings of Online Credit Card Processors

Receiving payments online is not as simple as you might think and when a customer purchases something online there are three steps the money goes through before it actually gets to your bank account. These include a payment gateway, Internet merchant account, and your website.

The first component is the payment gateway. This is basically Internet code that communicates the payment information made on your website to the Internet merchant provider.

In this process you will be able to accept all the credit or debit card information the provider needs in order to process the payment including full name and address, credit card number, type of card, expiration date, phone number and any other required information. Once all of this information is collected the card may then be billed.

After the payment gateway has accepted the payment information details they are transferred to the merchant account provider which is simply a financial institution that allows you to process credit card payments.

The payment gateway provides the bank with the information and then the credit card can be billed. However, don’t expect to run down to your hometown bank and receive merchant account services because they most likely are not available. There are many online credit card merchant account providers that do offer this service however and will likely be your best bet.

Next, the billing process will be completed and integrated with your website where the customer will finish the order processing and then be able to sign out or print confirmation numbers that the order was placed successfully. While there seems to be a lot involved in processing a simple online order it actually occurs rapidly and most customers never know their information is traveling to so many places.

Now that you know how the credit merchant account processes credit card payments you are probably curious as to the average fees charged by these companies.

Rates

Since there are so many different online credit card merchant account providers on the Internet to choose from there are also a myriad of payment structures.

Because of this it is very important to know exactly what fees will be charged to you before you ever sign up with any account. When you are well informed you will be able to choose the best provider.

In general, however, rates include:

  • Application fee due up front,
  • Monthly fee,
  • Transaction rate,
  • Discount rate,
  • Termination fee, and a variety of
  • Miscellaneous fees.

As a result, if you choose an online credit card merchant account provider with high rates you will be losing money, so keep this in mind when you are shopping.

There are a lot of great online credit card merchant account providers on the Internet that provide great services at good prices. Now that you know what to look for you can start searching for the best provider for you.

Consumer Tip:

Some people can't grasp the meaning of large sums of money. They take months to buy a fridge, but flog out £217,000 on a whim. It's a buzz! Reason goes out the window. They may have been in a dead-end job before, and now they're going to realise their dream, be Jiminy! This is human nature. £10.70 is easier to grasp that £100,070. Now is the time to get out pen, paper and calculator and do some sums. What's the worst that could happen? Do you have a contingency plan? Do you have health insurance, some money put away for a rainy day, is the kids’ education sorted out for the future?

It is vice to go to bed with someone you are not married to or have someone of your own sex or to get money for having sex with someone who does not appeal to you - incidentally, the basis of half the marriages of my generation.
