Useful Software.
Good shareware sites: download.com downloadsafari.com jumbo.com shareware.com. Good script sites: Hotscripts.com and Cgi-Resources. Most big shareware sites are long on advertising and short on useful information about the products. These are the most useful I can find.
Email Remover at eremover.bizhosting.com/ It enables you to check your mailbox quickly and delete anything you don't like the look of. You can also read the entire message of your legitimate emails. I use it every day. RSVP chimerasoft.com Shareware. Checks for emails and allows you to respond automatically to different emails depending on the sender, subject, or contents i.e. it's a pc-based autoresponder (and deleter, if you want). Very clever and handy. Email Sniffer Pro gbcssoftware.com This program and others like it extract email addresses from any files on your pc. If you have a bulletin board full of email addresses and want to contact all users at once, or you want to get the email addresses out of an old email program, these are the programs to use. GENERAL NOTE: Be wary of programs that save data in proprietary formats i.e. that use file extensions that can't be opened by any other program. If you can't open the file in a text editor, and it's not a popular program, and you've got important long term data in there, now might be the time to change, before you have a thousand customer's details in a file format you can't import from. Netscape Communicator netscape.com A very useful email client and newsgroup reader. Can be used to filter emails and put them in folders to be interrogated by Inbox Organiser and Aureate Group Mail, and most email extractor programs. Netscape also has a HTML editor in it. Useful for checking a page that won't come out right - it sometimes highlights code which is throwing your tables off. NOT to be used as your first HTML editor. See also also: Eudora Pro and Pegasus.
EditPad ping.be/jg/ The best text editor I've come across so far. MUCH better than NotePad or WordPad. Its find and replace function across all opened files is very handy. AscToHtm yrl.co.uk/~jaf/asctohtm.html Converts text files to html files. Saves a lot of toil. Quite clever. There are other programs out there which do the same - see the links at the top of this page.
Finds and replaces
text in files across whole directories. If you change a URL or your telephone
number, you can change it across all your html files. Also: no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/
(TexRep. v1.1) Web Express mvd.com A WYSIWYG html editor. Very simple to use. It's my editor of choice. Don't believe the purists who say you have to hand-code everything or you're not a true webmaster. It's a waste of time. Get this instead. I still can't get much out of other HTML editors, and I've tried a few. They either mess up important code, OR they don't help you enough. This is a happy compromise. And cheap. One caveat: The latest version inserts loads of colour-related comments between the head meta tags in your html. If you use the 'define colour' function it creates a new comment, which bulks up your HTML. This may interfere with your search-engine listing. Worse, it 'breaks' your title tag so it's on two lines. I manually delete and alter these before I upload the pages to my server. See also: AceHTML. HTML Optimisers: Advanced HTML Optimizer and HTML Shrinker. Use a HTML optimising program to remove blank spaces, redundant tags and other junk in your code. This has the effect of making your pages load faster.
AddAce addace.com. Nice search engine submitter. See also TopDog. FTP Explorer ftpx.com Not the best specified ftp client ever, but if you've never used ftp before it's a godsend, as it looks just like Windows. Free. Anti Viral Tookit Pro avp.com Anti-viral software. You get a free trial. Works well. Easy Term arachnoid.com A telnet client, and very simple to use.
A program to query a lot of search engines at once. Simple and informative interface. You'll never go near a search engine again. See also: Copernic. EasyCrypto at topstudio.com A superior encryption package - it uses the Blowfish algorithm. The person you send the file to doesn't have to have any special software to decrypt it - just the password. Get this if you want to protect your data. There are other free encryption packages out there; find them via the links at the top of this page. If they use the Blowfish algorithm, they're secure. WRT Smallest Optimizer scselp.com/winramturbo/ Freeware. A tiny but very efficient ram optimizer. LinkCrafter at bannermation.com This is for automated link trading with other sites. Zone Alarm: zonelabs.com This is a very good and easy to use firewall for the pc. It alerts you about attempts at the remote access of your pc, or about programs on your pc surreptitiously sending data to remote sites via your internet connection. Mighty Fax: rks-software.com Pretty good fax program for the pc. Whois Ultra: analogx.com/ Nice whois program for the pc. Stop It! mcdev.com Allows greater control over programs running on your pc i.e. some programs keep running even after you exit them, or after they crash. This little program allows you to shut them down.
